Tenderd

The Background - Group: Andy Rickert, Tal Frieden, Rachel Souza

Tenderd is a startup based in Abu Dhabi focused on revitalizing the process of renting heavy machinery for construction. The company was born when our founder left Silicon Valley to return to Abu Dhabi and realized that the most profitable part of the family business was heavy machinery rentals.

We chose this startup because of its mission to use technology to optimize previously existing relationships and business transactions. In our study of Tenderd we expanded the scope of the product to include construction site management, in order to make our product more intuitive and to make machine rentals more organized.

We chose to design a mobile application for construction site management and equipment rentals, because this would allow it to be used on-site by managers, equipment operators, and vendors.

Below are our initial sketches of an app.

Moving from a Sketch to a Prototype

Upon looking at the sketches, we tried to include the most important aspects from each person’s sketch, as we realized no one sketch had all of the best design elements. Such aspects that we kept were the machine detail page from Srishti’s sketch, the my sites page from Tal’s sketch, and the rental progress bars from Andy’s. After sketches, we decided on a consistent color scheme, as well as a consistent typeface. We found the critique session very useful, especially in learning what aspects of our design were confusing to others, such as our progress bars that looked more like toggle buttons. We also learned that some users found the design to be a little too childish and unprofessional, with very large fonts and lots of bolded text. Because of this, we readjusted some font sizes as well as unbolded some texts. We also adjusted our progress bars to change color, alerting users when they only have so many days left of their rentals. We also added a username and password field on the front page. We also listened to the advice to add a notification for when a rental is running out, shown on the “My Sites” page. We added a calendar view on the Bulldozers page to give the user a visual of the dates for which they can rent. Finally, we made substantial changes to the Hilton Remodel page, such as making the icons larger, making the page scrollable, and making it clearer how a user can add a machine, putting the button at the top of the screen.

Based on these decisions, we made a Prototype in Figma, with the pages shown below.
